JAPAN

Osaka is Japan's third largest city and is best known for its fun colourful architecture. I visited the city for 3 days on my 2 week trip to Japan and really enjoyed it. There was an exciting nightlife, amazing food, and really friendly atmosphere. Along with amusement arcades and plenty of places to shop, the city also features interesting historical elements, with the highlight being Osaka Castle. The city attracts approximately 15 million visitors each year, and whilst it can be enjoyed all year round, the best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is slightly warmer and landscapes are more colourful.
Here are my top six things to do while visiting this lively city:
Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle is a large complex of buildings, moats, gardens, stone walls and gates. The main keep (pictured) houses a museum, which is well worth visiting if you are interested in learning about Japan's history, but if you are a more of 'casual tourist' then just walking around the periphery and admiring the architecture, views and beautiful gardens is something you must take in and experience.

Dotonbori District
Dotonbori is Osaka's most well known tourist destination, with the neon lit buildings, buzzing nightlife, tasty eateries and endless shops, it has enough to keep you occupied for a whole day! You can hop on a river cruise down the central canal to fully take in the scenery Osaka has to offer.

Universal Studios
Universal Studios in Japan is a fantastic experience and always a favourite for families. The theme park opened in 2001 and is filled with thrilling rides, live performances throughout the day and multiple attractions based on famous movies and characters. It is such a fun filled day out and is actually one of the largest theme parks in Asia, with 10 unique lands to explore.
The best rides for me were Hollywood Dream (rollercoaster) and The Flying Dinosaur (rollercoaster). Admittedly, I am not a Potterhead , but if you are then you will definitely be wanting to explore The Wizarding World of Harry Porter, you'll spend hours there!

Shitennoji Temple
Shitennoji is one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples (said to be founded in 593 AD), and if you are interested in the spirituality and history of the country, then it is well worth a visit.
Most of the outer buildings and expansive grounds are free to visit, but admission is required for the five storey pagoda and main hall.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan
This is an absolutely amazing aquarium, which features impressive exhibits of marine life of the Pacific Rim, from the Artic to the Great Barrier Reef. There is plenty to see there, but the whale shark exhibit in the middle of everything is the highlight.
The aquarium is very well designed and would say it is one of the best I have ever been to. It does however get quite busy, so is crowded at times. Is a 5 minute walk from Osakako Station.

Tsutenkaku Tower
The Tsutenkaku Tower is an iconic landmark in Japan, giving 360 degree panoramic views of Osaka from its observation deck. The tower is quite dated, but gives a very fun 80s atmosphere.
The tower has a total height of 103 metres and is located in the Shinsekai district, which is full of life and cosy eateries. This area is a great place to experience the local culture and food.
