I have now lived in Bangkok for just over a year, and it is a city of great contrasts. For example, you can shop at luxury shopping malls or head to local bustling markets for some bargains, and you can go from enjoying fine dinning at a rooftop restaurant, to indulging in some tasty cheap street food. But since living here, it is clear you can enjoy the city without spending a fortune.
So if you're a seasoned traveller or visiting Thailand for the first time, this guide will help you explore Bangkok’s best without opening your wallet (well, admittedly you may have to pay for transport to get to some of these places!).
From stunning temples to hidden local gems, here are the top 10 free things to do in Bangkok:
1. Marvel at the Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew (Outside View)
Location: Na Phra Lan Road

Yes, entering the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) does require a ticket, but you can still admire their beautiful exterior for free! The intricate gold details, towering spires, and towering gates are a magnificent sight. Best to visit early in the morning (before 8 AM) to avoid crowds.
2. Stroll Through Lumpini and Benchakitti Parks

Take a break from the city chaos and stroll through the beautiful parks Bangkok has to offer. Lumpini and Benchakitti are like Bangkok’s answer to Central Park, peaceful escapes with lakes, walking paths, and even monitor lizards (don’t worry, they’re harmless!).
You can even hire pedal boats for free to glide across the lakes.
Best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
3. View the Stunning Wat Arun From Across The River
Location: West bank of the Chao Phraya River

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) is one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. It does cost a small fee to enter the temple, but you can just enjoy perfect views for free from the opposite side of the river (near Wat Pho).
Sunset is this best time to view the temple, as it glows as the sky turns golden.
4.Wander Through Chinatown’s Colourful Streets
Location: Yaowarat Road

Bangkok’s Chinatown is a sensory overload in the best way! Wandering the streets filled with neon signs, colourful lanterns, aromatic street food, and bustling markets make it a must visit. Check out Sampeng Lane for some quirky shops.
5. Visit the Erawan Shrine
Location: Ratchaprasong Intersection

The Erawan Shrine is a fairly small but famous Hindu shrine, where locals and tourists come to make offerings and watch traditional Thai dance performances, which are free to observe.
Is a great spot to soak in Bangkok’s spiritual side, while enjoying the energy of the city.
6. Asiatique Riverfront Promenande
Location: Charoen Krung Road

Asiatique is a riverfront destination that combines shopping, dining, and entertainment in a fantastic riverside location. However, you don't have to spend any money there if you don't wish to, you can just simply enjoy strolling through the 1,500+ boutique shops and catch a dazzling light show or admire the iconic ferris wheel.
7. Watch the Sunset at Chao Phraya River
Location: River City Bangkok

One of the most romantic, and free, things to do in Bangkok, is watching the sunset over the Chao Phraya River.
Find a spot along the promenade, watch the longtail boats and river cruises glide by, and see the city lights slowly come to life.
8. Visit the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (BACC)
Location: Near Siam Square

If you enjoy art, then the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (BACC) is a great place to visit, as it offers free exhibitions featuring contemporary Thai artists. With rotating displays, cool cafes, and a creative vibe, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon.
9. Experience a Local Market – Without Spending a Baht!
Location: Best Markets: Chatuchak (Weekends), Pak Khlong Talat (Flower Market)

Bangkok’s markets are legendary, and you don’t have to buy anything to enjoy them!
Chatuchak Weekend Market – One of the world’s largest markets. Just browsing is an adventure!
Pak Khlong Talat – A 24-hour flower market bursting with colours and fragrances.
10. Join a Free Meditation Session at Wat Mahathat
Location: Near Sanam Luang

For a truly unique experience, Wat Mahathat offers free meditation classes in English. There are daily three hour classes run from: 7am – 10am. 1pm – 4pm. 6pm – 9pm. Whether you're experienced or a beginner, this is a wonderful way to connect with Thai Buddhist culture.
Final Thoughts
You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy the city, Bangkok on a budget is completely possible! From golden temples to peaceful parks, Thailand's capital offers plenty of free experiences that are just as rewarding as paid attractions.
So, pack your walking shoes, grab your camera, and get ready to explore the best of Bangkok without spending a baht!
